Q:
This program looks great, but I've already graduated. Am I eligible? |
A:
No. You must do the internship for undergraduate credit.
Q:
Do you offer undergraduate internships at other times of the year? |
A:
No. The internship is only from January through March or April each year. We do not offer summer internships.

Q:

I'm not a political science major and haven't taken a civics class since high school. Am I a good candidate? |
A:
We welcome students in any major or discipline who are interested in public policy. It's helpful to have taken a college level class in government or policy but not required.

Q:
How do the dates of the legislative session coincide with school terms? |
A:
For quarter system students, the 60 day session (even years) coincides with the dates of winter quarter at most schools, since it runs from early January to mid-March. In 105 day sessions (odd years), interns attending quarter system schools may end their internships at the end of their winter quarter. Subject to legislative approval, students may stay beyond winter quarter for the full 105 days.
For semester system students, the internships conclude at the end of the session, whether 60 days or 105 days. Most semester system schools accommodate interns by a variety of arrangements, such as having them work on their academic requirement for the internship after session ends. Q:
Where do I live if I’m selected as an intern? |
A:
Interns are responsible for their own housing. However, Olympia has plentiful housing during session, and finding reasonable accommodations is usually not a problem. A list of available housing is provided. Interns may choose to be on a roommate list. Interns are encouraged to seek housing as soon as feasible after selection.

Q:
How much credit do I get for the internship? |
A:
The amount and type of credit are up to each school. Check with your advisor, the Career Center, Cooperative Education, or Political Science Department at your school.

Q:
I don't have a car. Will this be a problem? |
A:
A vehicle is not required for the internship. Thurston County has a public transit system and some interns arrange carpools.

Q:
I am a student and I dress like one. If selected, how am I expected to dress? |
A:
Interns, like other staff, are expected to dress professionally. For men, a suit jacket and tie are required to have access to the House and Senate floor. Jeans and tennis shoes are definitely out. This does not mean, however, that interns are expected to buy an entire new wardrobe. Many interns get by with just one jacket or a few outfits and interns have picked up some great bargains at Olympia thrift stores.
