House of Representatives > Campbell > Rep. Campbell with Military Service Dogs - largephoto

A little noted, but very important event in the 2005 session was the unanimous vote for House Joint Memorial 4020 supporting a national War Dog Memorial in Washington, D.C. The effort is to honor thousands of highly trained dogs that have made an important contribution in every war since World War I. U.S. troops use dogs for search and rescue, booby-trap detection, bomb sniffing, guard watch and much more.

Sadly, in 1975 when the US was leaving South Vietnam, some 4,000 dogs were tragically left behind, declared 'surplus.' When the House passed the resolution, I was proud to join a pair of Fort Lewis soldiers and their patrol dogs, Sgt. 1st Class Annette and Staff Sgt Rex. These animals saved thousands of lives in battle over the years, and deserve to be honored. The non-profit organization behind the proposal is trying to raise $8 million for the memorial.
